Is it better to buy flea treatment from your local veterinary practice or the ones you find in supermarkets and pet shops? In this blog, Valley Vetcare Veterinary Nurse, Martyn Brophy, explains why you should purchase flea treatments from a vet, and the benefits.

Why Should I Purchase Flea Treatment From My Vets?

In short, the answer to this is quite simple: yes, you should buy flea treatments from your vet! This is because your vets can sell you licensed products which are more effective. A licenced flea product combined with hands-on expertise is the best way to ensure fleas are eradicated and stay away.

Are There Any Benefits To Buying Flea Treatment From Your Vets?

At our Rochdale Veterinary Practice, we can offer you a free flea check for your pet with one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses. During this consultation, your pet will be weighed and the nurse will discuss with you the lifestyle of you and your pet, along with any activities they undertake. This will help them decide which product is best suited for your pet and that the correct strength can be dispensed to ensure it is most efficacious.

Many products will treat various types of parasites, not just fleas, therefore it is important to know which will work best for you. For instance, if you take regular walks in the countryside then we would opt for a solution which would also treat ticks.

We also stock products which can be given by either the spot-on method, or given orally as a tablet, so it is useful to not only know which you prefer but also which you feel more able to administer.

However, should you require assistance then the nurse can administer this for you within the consultation to relieve any worries over whether it has been correctly given. This can be a one-off demonstration or we would be happy to undertake this for you each time. We can how tricky this can be with some patients!

In summary, the benefits of buying flea treatments from our veterinary practice are;

  • A free flea check with a Registered Veterinary Nurse
  • Health check to decide on an appropriate treatment
  • Choice of treatments depending on your pet and lifestyle
  • Licensed, effective treatments
  • Treatment administration for tricky pets!

Ongoing Pet Care & Flea Treatment

As mentioned above, our products are licensed, then this brings with it some stipulations we have to follow to adhere to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

Your pet must be seen at the practice every 12 months to allow us to dispense medications on the list. These products are superior to over the counter preparations you can buy, say for example from the supermarket, therefore we must adhere to ensuring your pet’s health and wellbeing regularly. It is also important that we have a regular recorded weight to ensure the correct strength is used.
