Why Are Dog Vaccinations Necessary?
Though not a legal requirement in the UK, it is strongly recommended that all dog owners ensure their dogs are vaccinated.
Dog vaccinations are crucial for preventing a range of dangerous and infectious diseases that can make your dog extremely unwell. This includes Parvovirus, Canine distemper, Leptospirosis, and Adenovirus (also known as infectious Hepatitis). In severe cases, some of these diseases can be fatal.
Kennel cough is also recommended if you plan to board your dog in a kennel or use the services of group dog walkers/sitters. Additionally, if you plan on taking your dog out of the UK, you may want to consider a Rabies vaccination.
When Does My Puppy Need Vaccinating?
Puppies should receive their first vaccinations at 6-8 weeks old and should have their second 4 weeks later. Before this, your puppy should not be allowed on the ground outside of your home and should not be allowed near unvaccinated dogs. Your puppy is allowed in your garden, provided it is secure from foxes and unvaccinated dogs.
Dogs can be vaccinated at any age. If, for whatever reason, you are unsure if your dog has been vaccinated, get in touch with our team today.
Routine Dog Vaccinations In Rochdale
Following their puppy vaccinations, your dog should have booster vaccinations to remain protected and healthy. This includes:
- Leptospirosis booster every year
- Distemper booster every 3 years
- Parvovirus booster every 3 years
- Hepatitis booster every 3 years
Booster vaccinations will prevent your dog’s immunity from decreasing over time.

What To Expect At A Vaccination Appointment
At Valley Vetcare, we aim to make the vaccination appointment as stress-free as possible. First, one of our experienced team members will provide a full health check and ask you some basic questions about your dog’s health.
Your dog will then be injected into the skin on the back of their neck (except for Kennel Cough, which is usually inserted up the nose). If necessary, we will ask you to hold your dog still whilst we do this.
Though most vaccinations don’t have side effects, some dogs may be sleepier or quieter than usual for up to 2 days following their vaccinations.
